Cultural Association of Mesotopos, Lesvos, "Anagennisi"

Founded in 1975, the Cultural Association of Mesotopos, Lesvos, Anagennisi has played an active role in preserving local heritage and fostering cultural expression. Through its vibrant dance, theater, choir, and traditional music departments, the Association promotes artistic creativity and community engagement. It regularly organizes diverse cultural events (ranging from music and dance performances to theatrical productions) and has proudly represented Lesvos at major festivals both in Greece and internationally.

In community development, Anagennisi has been equally active. Since 1979, it has established a rural medical clinic and a cultural center in the village, and it also maintains a privately-owned cultural hall in Dafni, Attiki. The Association also leads environmental efforts such as tree-planting campaigns and ecological awareness programs.

Its publishing work includes a two-volume folklore collection by Panos Kontellis titled “The Small World”, and a series of plays written in the local dialect. Since 1977, it has been publishing the bimonthly newspaper “Mesotopitika Nea”, an annual calendar, and for a decade, the yearly magazine “Mesotopos: Tradition and Culture”. In 2014, the Association released a special commemorative album, “40 Years, 1975–2014,” reflecting on its rich history and contributions.

It has an active digital presence through its website and Facebook page, Anagennisi and also operates a blood bank, founded in 1982, promoting solidarity and social responsibility within the community.

The Association has produced three music collections:

  1. “Stelios Kalaitzis – Perkos: Forty Years of Songs and Music”
  2. “The Meraklis – Songs from Lesvos and Smyrna” featuring Nikos Kalaitzis–Bintagialas and Stratis Rallis
  3. “Tonight, Our Gathering…”, a unique three-part release (book, CD, USB) celebrating traditional music and dance from Mesotopos, edited by Fotis Vassiloglou

In addition, a DVD of Byzantine hymns from Holy Week, performed by local chanter Ignatios Sarantidis, adds to the Association’s cultural archive.

Over the decades, Anagennisi has hosted a wide array of events, including:

  • Local dialect theater by P. Kontellis and Th. Vassiloglou
  • International plays
  • Music and dance festivals
  • Art exhibitions
  • Educational talks and book presentations
  • Guided tours of historical and archaeological sites
  • Cultural excursions and dance nights

Since 1983, it has been the driving force behind the annual “Summer Events” in Mesotopos, now a cherished tradition. Through its artistic groups and cultural initiatives, the Association preserves and shares the living folk heritage of the region, with authenticity and care.

One of its most notable projects has been the preservation of the village’s historic watermill. The Association financed the architectural study and building permit needed to secure inclusion in the EU LEADER program. In partnership with the Malliontas Cultural Association, the full restoration of the watermill was completed between 2020 and 2025.

Cultural, Beautification, and Educational Association of Mallionta

Ματσιλίνις

Established in 2000, the Malliontas Association is dedicated to protecting the natural beauty of the valley and encouraging volunteerism. It revived the traditional festival of Saint Constantine and promotes sustainable use of local water resources. One of its founding goals was the restoration of the old watermill, now a reality. The mill and the surrounding areas are co-owned by Anagennisi and the Malliontas Association. Together, they continue to protect and enhance this important piece of cultural heritage.

United by a shared vision, both associations remain committed to cultural growth, environmental stewardship, and community spirit—driven by the passion, solidarity, and support of their members and friends.
