Malliontas Cultural Association
Established in 2000, the Malliontas Association is dedicated to protecting the natural beauty of the valley and encouraging volunteerism.

The mill and the surrounding areas are co-owned by Anagennisi and the Malliontas Association.

Mesotopos

Tucked at the base of Mount Pezla, Mesotopos is a semi-mountainous village with approximately 800 permanent residents and more than twice as many expatriates who remain deeply connected to their roots. With sweeping views of the open sea, the village blends tradition with forward-thinking spirit.

Renowned for their resilience and work ethic, the people of Mesotopos have transformed modest land into a productive landscape. The local economy is centered on the primary sector—agriculture, livestock farming, and fishing—while local processing and production are supported by two key cooperatives:The Mesotopos Agricultural Cooperative And the Women’s Agritourism Cooperative of Mesotopos

The watermills primarily ground cereals, especially wheat, producing flour for household use.

In 1927, a diesel-powered flour mill began operating in Mesotopos, gradually changing the landscape of grain milling. The Greek Civil War (1946-1949) led to the abandonment of these traditional watermills. Only one was briefly revived but closed permanently in 1955-1956.

The valley of Mallionda

Mallionda, a rural area within the Mesotopos region, is traversed by the river of the same name.

Water was brought in from the Agios Konstantinos spring, located 8 kilometers away—2 of those across particularly rough terrain.

ACTIVITIES

Educational Programs

The educational programs are currently in development and will launch alongside the opening of the mill.

01. From Wheat to Bread

Children will learn about:

  • the history of bread
  • the journey from sowing to eating
  • traditional farming tools
  • different types of bread
  • various grains and their nutritional value…

02. From Grapes to Wine and Ouzo

Wearing little vintner hats, the children will explore the small vineyard next to the old watermill. They’ll pick grapes from the vines and pour them into a traditional grape press, where they’ll crush them with their hands. Then, they’ll collect the fresh must in a small barrel…

…

03. From Olive to Olive Oil

Our young olive oil makers will visit a nearby olive grove to get up close with the trees and their fruits. At the estate’s own olive tree next to the watermill, they’ll watch the traditional method of harvesting: beating the branches, combing the olives onto large cloths, and separating the olives from the leaves and twigs. They’ll then learn how olive oil is made, step by step…
